The Motherhood Group delivers specialist Black maternal health training, cultural competency training, maternal health inequalities education and perinatal mental health training for healthcare professionals, NHS Trusts, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), commissioners, policymakers and organisations across the UK.

Our evidence-informed programmes help organisations understand and address the racial disparities that continue to impact Black women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. We equip healthcare professionals with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to provide culturally competent maternity care, improve patient experience and reduce inequalities in maternal health outcomes.

As one of the UK's leading organisations working in Black maternal health, Black maternal mental health and health equity, we combine research, lived experience and national policy expertise to deliver impactful workforce development programmes that create meaningful change.

Black women in the UK are 3.7 times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth or the postnatal period than white women. Black mothers are also more likely to experience severe maternal morbidity, poor mental health outcomes, delayed diagnosis and barriers to accessing appropriate support. Our training directly addresses these disparities through practical, evidence-based learning that supports safer, more equitable maternity care.

We offer bespoke in-person and online workshops, cultural competency programmes, keynote sessions, masterclasses and workforce development training for NHS organisations, maternity services, local authorities, charities, universities and corporate partners.

The Case for Change

Black women continue to experience some of the worst maternity outcomes in the UK.

3.7x

more likely to die
during pregnancy or
chilbirth

2-3x

more likely to experience
severe maternal morbidity

Less likely

to have mental health
concerns identified
or treated
Training alone will not solve inequalities.
But without training, inequalities can not be solved.
