The theme for this year's event is:

Transforming & Advancing Change

Black Maternal Mental Health Week UK 2024, coordinated by The Motherhood Group, is a crucial initiative focusing on the mental well-being of Black mothers and their children. This year's theme, "Transforming and Advancing Change," underscores our commitment to driving meaningful progress.

Our carefully chosen sub-themes bring to the forefront key areas: understanding disparities, breaking stigma, addressing birth trauma, nurturing child mental health, and building support networks. By highlighting these issues, we aim to develop targeted interventions that truly meet our community's needs. This comprehensive approach allows us to address the unique challenges Black mothers face, fostering better mental health outcomes and creating lasting change for Black mothers and their families.
Sandra Igwe, Chief Executive at The Motherhood Group, stated,
"As a Black mother who understands the issues with perinatal mental health, I've seen the critical gaps in our system. The Motherhood Group recognises the importance of destigmatising mental health and empowering Black mothers to lead these conversations. We're bridging the divide between our community and healthcare providers, amplifying our voices, and driving real change."

Our stories, Our voice

Central to our initiative is the power of our lived experiences. When we, as Black mothers, share our stories, we give voice to statistics, challenging stereotypes and educating healthcare providers and policymakers. Our narratives create a sense of community, showing others they're not alone. By involving Black mothers from our community, we ensure that our efforts are grounded in our real experiences and needs. This approach leads us to develop more effective, culturally sensitive support systems and policies that truly serve our community.
