One of the biggest misconceptions about being a Stay-At-Home-Mum (SAHM) is that you have all the time in the world to attend Zumba classes, baby rhyme-time recitals and have afternoon naps. How far from the truth!

In my opinion, SAHMs are the most hardworking, most sacrificial and most resourceful women around and their impact, often unseen and unappreciated, needs to be celebrated and highlighted on a daily basis. They are the bedrock of society and the foundation for family life.
I chose to stay home when my children were younger but I had no clue what I was getting myself into. There were mountaintop moments - watching my children achieve milestones, being the main educator in their lives, pouring love and faith into them; but there were many valleys too - the sheer loneliness and insecurity, the constant fear of losing out in my career and feeling trapped. It was a real tug-of-war!
Those wild and wonderful years reminded me of how much my children benefitted and how much I grew as a person.
Thriving as a SAHM is thriving as a person; growing in purpose as an individual created for purpose. Before you were a mother, a wife and a partner, you were a woman, uniquely gifted with the skills to have an impact in this world.
Tribe
No mum was created to parent in isolation. It takes a tribe to nurture a mother. Look around you and decide who is in your tribe – Who is a supporter? Who can you count on? Who is willing and able to do life with you? With a trusted tribe, you will surely thrive!
Hive
Your home is your hive. And your hive is where your whole heart and mind are invested. Don’t despise this time in your life and don’t apologise for not being able to do everything. If you build your hive well, you will enjoy years of sweet honey from your “bees.”
Real
Keep it real! This is necessary for your mental health and the ambience of your home. If you’re having a down day, turn to your tribe and don’t turn on yourself or your family. If you’re feeling great, celebrate. Be true to yourself.
Invest
This is the season to sow wise seeds of investment so you can reap the rewards in the future. Invest in your joy, your financial literacy, your children’s education, your marriage conversation and in delegation. Ask for help!
“Supermum” only exists as a guilty figment of your imagination.
Vision
Vision is key! Being a SAHM ebbs and flows in seasons so ensure you are looking ahead, while remaining present. Your vision will fuel the monotony. Ask yourself who you want to be when your children leave home and begin to courageously craft your character for that time. It will surely come.
Energy
Motherhood requires bundles of energy and it is paramount that you remain healthy. What will it take to preserve your energy? Gift yourself with time to exercise, the resolve to choose healthy food and permission to let go of negative energy from people and places.
